The selection committee consisted of theater professionals as well as academics working in theater departments.The main selection criteria used to select the winning plays were:

• Artistic merit
• Success in creatively exploring the role of hope, despair, optimism, pessimism or related states in human life
• Ability to have high production value within the constraints of chosen theatrical venue
• Feasibility for production within the time constraints of the grant.
